Discipline Boot Camp | pt. 4

Well we are rolling along with this series of post on How to add some discipline to your life.  I really believe that everyone wants to be more disciplined in some area of their life; but how does it happen?  How do we become disciplined in our approach to life?  If this is your first time here then please check out the earlier post in this series; you can check them out here:   Discipline Boot Camp Part 1, Discipline Boot Camp Part 2 and Discipline Boot Camp Part 3.

In today’s post I am going to discuss our need for relational support in developing our Internal Operating System.  As we develop a health Internal operating system we will gain the ability to successfully apply the “app” of discipline to our life.  Now, before we get into this third point, I want to make it clear that this information is based on my study of Dr. Townsend’s book The Entitlement Cure.  Are you ready for Step 3?  Let’s do it!

Step 3:  Recruit Relational Support

Galatians 6:1-2 (NLT) – Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.

So far we have looked at creating our worthwhile goals and external structure.  Now we start to add some accountability to our goals so that we have a team in our corner cheering us on and pushing us to excellence.  As you recruit friends to help you in your goals you will want to think about these aspects of your friends character:

  • They should not be judgmental – as you work through your goals and life growth you will need to come to terms that you will fail at times.  When you fail, your friends should not be judgmental of your failure but supportive and able to confront you out of love.  You will have to be able to differentiate between loving confrontation from your friends and a spirit of judgment.
  • They should push you to excellence – your friends should be your biggest cheer-leaders as they encourage you and push you to reach your goals.
  • They should be engaged in your personal growth – choose friends that will have the time to meet with you on a regular basis during this time of growth.  As they meet with you they have your permission to ask you detailed questions about your progress and offer ideas for further growth.

I have 5 key friends in my life to help me reach my life goals and offer support in my pursuits.  They are honest with me (without being judgmental) when I am off track.  They love me even when I fail.  And I feel completely comfortable sharing with them EVER aspect of my life (they cannot help me if I am hiding stuff from them).

Choose your friends wisely – they will be a huge key to the success of your life growth goals!
