Today I’m starting a three part series on health with a guest blogger and personal friend, Chris Collins.  He is just coming off a successful year of losing 100lbs.  Let me tell you, physically, he is a new man!  For the next three Tuesdays he will be sharing his story.  Please read it and share it with your friends!

Motivation for My Journey to Health

In order to get anything worthwhile done in your life, you have to have motivation. You need a reason or purpose for doing it. That includes making the decision to lose weight and get healthy.

I lost 100 lbs. in 2016. I want to tell you my story and share with you my motivation for working on my health. I hope it will encourage you.

My Story

I have been overweight since I was about 8 years old. My problem became the worst in college and grad school when I ate a lot and exercised very little. When I finished grad school at 23 years old, I weighed 355 lbs. I still was not very active, and my eating was out of control.

That fall I was planning to do missions work in Puerto Rico. I met with my former youth pastor while I was seeking the church’s support, and he gave me a piece of advice that began to change me. He told me I needed to lose some weight and get healthy if I wanted to serve God long term in missions. I couldn’t be effective or last long in my ministry for God if I stayed where I was at or got worse.

As hard as that was to hear, he was right. At that point I made some temporary changes in my diet and exercise and lost 40 lbs. over the next year. But then I started letting my health slide again, and I gained back 25 lbs. over the following year.

Then I met Sarah.

A New Phase of Life

Sarah became one of my biggest motivations to work on my health last year. She fell in love with me when I was 340 lbs., but I knew that I could not stay there if I wanted to be a good husband to her.

We were getting married in April 2016, and I wanted to be the best I could possibly be for my bride. I managed to lose about 30 lbs. before the wedding, and even though I still wasn’t where I wanted to be, I was making progress.

Planning for the Future

Another thing that really motivated me to work on my health was looking to the future again. I had been focused on the present, and I needed a bigger view. Two things about my future really motivated me.

I really wanted to be in good health to be able to serve God effectively on the mission field. This has gotten much more real this past year, as Sarah and I took a survey trip to Mexico and were later approved to be missionaries there. Now that it seems so real, and not so far off, my health has become a priority. I want to serve God the best I possibly can—and not just in the future, but right now too. I’m much more effective in my current work and ministries since I’ve lost 100 lbs.

Another future thought that motives me is the desire to have children. Sarah and I would like to have a few children of our own (besides the ones we’ll care for in the orphanage). I want to be in good health so I can be a good dad, so I can play with them and have energy to take care of them. That thought motivates me to work on my health now.

Why Wait?

I read somewhere recently that we tend to stay where we’re at until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of making a change. Change is hard. It’s hard to change eating habits you’ve had for years. It’s hard to give up desserts and other foods you really enjoy. It’s hard to be disciplined and exercise when you’d rather sit on the couch. But it’s worth it.

I can tell you that my life is so much better in so many ways since I’ve lost 100 lbs. If you make the commitment to get healthy, and have people hold you accountable, you can get healthy too. You will not regret the decision.

What you gain is far more valuable than what you give up.

Getting healthy will strengthen you physically, spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. You will be a better person in every way if you make the commitment to change.

But YOU have to decide. YOU have to make the choice to change. No one else can do it for you. And the longer you wait, the harder it gets. So why not choose health today? What do you have to lose?
