How To Get More Self-Control

God sees (Instagram)What can a person accomplish in life?  As I think about some of the great men and women of history and read about their endeavors I’m amazed at what they have accomplished with the life God gave them.  But what’s even more amazing to me is how so many people miss their calling because they lacked a few character skills that ended up derailing their life.  A key character trait that we need to develop is SELF-CONTROL.  Consider what Proverbs says about self-control:

Proverbs 5:21-23 (NLT)
For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.

Now, there is a misunderstanding about how we gain self-control.  You see, I cannot just tell myself to be more controlled.  If I already don’t have self-control I cannot give myself more self-control.  I have to go outside of myself to gain self-control.

Illustration:  When I’m driving my car and the car runs out of gas, the car cannot produce more gas for itself; someone outside the car has to acquire gas and pour it into the car.

The same is true for us.  If I lack self-control I cannot give myself self-control, I have to go outside of myself and find someone who has self-control to help me.

This is why accountability partners are so critical in life development, a good accountability partner will “pour” self-control into your life.
