Anger vs Peace

Peace (instagram)Do you ever find yourself BLOWING UP over things in life that don’t go your way or with other people (kids, spouse, co-workers) when their actions (or lack of) effect you?  Today’s verse gives some insight on the balance of anger and peace in our life.

Proverbs 14:29-30 (NLT)
People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness. A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.

Here’s what I find interesting about this verse; “people with understanding control…”  I have to keep in mind the big picture before I blow my stack.  When something or someone is stressing me out the best thing I can do is to:  take a step back, take a deep breathe and look at the “big picture”.  I need to try and understand what is happening then I can get a better handle on my anger.  If I can remember to follow-through on those 3 steps I will usually have a lot more peace in my life (and with those I am dealing with).

So remember, when you get stressed because of circumstances or others take these 3 steps first:

  1. Take a step back (take 5 min. to reflect on the issue)
  2. Take a deep breathe (keep silent / just take some deep breathes as you reflect on the issue)
  3. Take a look at the big picture (try to understand what is REALLY happening here; what are the bigger issues that are causing the issues at hand?  Maybe you will see that the real issue is not as big as you thought it was).
