BVD- Self-Discipline

What does it mean to have self-discipline?  For me, I try to live a very disciplined life (Health, Finances, Relationships, Spiritual Growth).  I don’t nail it all the time, in fact, I fail at Self-Discipline on a regular basis.  Over the years I have grown in my Self-Discipline but I have to be honest – it’s really not me.  Look at today’s Bible verse.  God tells us that Self-Discipline really comes from the Holy Spirit who lives in us.  Think about this – nobody is perfect (even perfectionist).  The more I strive to live a self-disciplined life the more I realize how screwed up I really am.  Sure I can fake it for a while; but at some point I am going to fail and screw up the very thing I was striving for (be it weight loss, devotions, anger management, restraint of a sinful habit, etc…).

To really get self-discipline down I must submit to God’s leading in my life (through his Holy Spirit).  Romans 12:1-2 also suggest this:

Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

If we are going to change the way we act, we have to change the way we think.  Changing the way we think start with my relationship with Jesus, God the Father and His Holy Spirit who lives in me.

Think about it; when we rest in our relationship with the Holy Spirit, Self-discipline become a lot easier.

Commit today’s verse to memory and draw on it through the day; see how God will grow your Self-Discipline.
