I just finished up reading Recovering Redemption by Pastor Matt Chandler. This is my first Chandler book and I have to say I was very pleased with it and the encouragement he gives in living a life that glorifies Jesus Christ. Over the past year there have been several of my friends who have recommended books by Pastor Chandler or encouraged me to listen to several of his online messages. Again, I want to reiterate that Recovering Redemption was a very compelling book for me to read as I work at applying it’s biblical principles to my life.
Here is a summary of Recovering Redemption from the Audible Audio Book website:
Recovering Redemption. What does it mean? Recovering: Getting back, restoring. Redemption: God’s plan of salvation, the gospel. Because we have a tendency to drift from the gospel, we must be reoriented back to the gospel. We must recover a right understanding and application of the gospel. We must see that the gospel is the fuel for salvation and sanctification and the panacea to fix all things. The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9 I can’t. God can. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 God meets you where you are. But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
I was very pleased with the content of Recovering Redemption as it relates to the process of living a successful Christian life and what is required of a person to get “Un-Stuck” with their life. Being a recovering porn addict, I found his presentation of material and the truth of the Bible to be both straight-forward and practical.
I will probably use the book as a Bible study with other guys who seem to be stuck in life and desire to live a life of maturity.
