Improving Your Relationships (Pt1)

Young Man Showing Two Male Friends Cell Phone

Understanding the 2 Types of Friends

Casual Friends

Casual friends are the result of circumstances in our life.  For instance, we are casual friends with the folks in our neighborhood, where we work and where we go to church (maybe even the members of the wait staff at our favorite restaurant).

Casual friends come and go in our life.  We know them and they know us at the surface level but after that we really don’t know a whole lot about each other’s life.

Close Friends

Close friends are the result of choices we make regarding our friends.  Consider the following verses from proverbs:

Proverbs 27:19 (TLB)
A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.

Proverbs 12:26 (NIV)
A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Our character is shaped, in a large part, by the friends we choose.  The book of 1 Corinthians in the New Testament even says that bad company corrupts good morals.  We have the ability/responsibility to choose our friends.  We need to be cautious about the close friends we choose.

Check back tomorrow when I’ll share about the five kinds of people to avoid as close friends.

Also, for further reading, consider the book Best Friends Forever, by John Townsend.  It is a great book and a fast read on the topic of developing great friendships for life.
